A Pair of Russian Silver Caskets from the Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna Service. Oval, each on four pairs of paw feet, issuing from lions’ masks, surmounted by fluted pilasters and military trophies, the lower scroll border centering the cipher of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna beneath an Imperial crown, the hinged domed cover with bands of strap work and beads with gilt interior. The Grand Duchess (1819-1876) was the eldest daughter of Emperor Nicholas I.
