Last week an entourage of 30 people … unloaded …  jeweled gold windup toys at A La Vieille Russie gallery on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The pieces had just arrived from Switzerland, where most of them were manufactured in the 18th and 19th centuries. They double as snuffboxes, perfume containers and timepieces, with mechanisms that power tiny birds, boats, crystal waterfalls, magicians, lumberjacks and cupids.

The exhibition of the Sandoz Collection, which will be exhibited in New York at A La Vieille Russie from October 26th – November 26th, marks the first time that many of the pieces will be on display to the American public.
