Last week an entourage of 30 people … unloaded …Â jeweled gold windup toys at A La Vieille Russie gallery on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The pieces had just arrived from Switzerland, where most of them were manufactured in the 18th and 19th centuries. They double as snuffboxes, perfume containers and timepieces, with mechanisms that power tiny birds, boats, crystal waterfalls, magicians, lumberjacks and cupids.

Parmigiani Fleurier and A La Vieille Russie, the New York antiques gallery specializing in European and American antique jewelry and Russian works of art, are teaming up to present Mechanical Wonders: Antique Automatons and Contemporary Watchmaking, offering watch collectors and connoisseurs a unique opportunity to celebrate the art of watchmaking. The exhibition of the Sandoz Collection, which will be exhibited in New York at A La Vieille Russie from October 26th – November 26th, marks the first time that many of the pieces will be on display to the American public. The exhibition features mechanical marvels of the past, works of Fabergé including the Imperial Peacock and Swan eggs, and contemporary timepiece creations of Parmigiani Fleurier.
