TIME TO COLLECT: Russian Art from Foreign Private Collections [ВРЕМЯ СОБИРАТЬ]
State Russian Museum, Benois Wing, St. Petersburg, Russia
Thursday, February 14, 2008 - Monday, May 12, 2008

A La Vieille Russie is proud to participate.

The following is a translation from the website of the State Russian Museum:

The exhibition “A Time to Collect” provides a unique opportunity to view works of art preserved in different collections and different countries of the world in the rooms of the Museum.

The majority of works exhibited are being shown in Russia for the first time, including those by artists from the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries: Fyodor Rotokov (“Female Portrait”), Vladimir Borovikovsky (“Portrait of Ivan Yakovlev”), Karl Briullov (“Portrait of Maximilian of Leichtenberg”), Orest Kirpensky (“Portrait of Anna de Segur”) and Aleksei Venetsianov (“Head of a Peasant Woman”), previously known to only a small circle of specialists.

Western collectors have long shown an interest in Russian émigré artists, acquiring works directly from the masters. As a result whole collections of works by artists who left Russia, such as Aleksandr Yakovlev, Boris Grigoryev, Boris Anisfeld and others, ended up in the West. These masters are known in Russia only by their early works; the paintings represented in the exhibition show the viewer their creative development.

The works of many émigrés, such as Nikolai Tarkhov, Maria Vasilyevna, Pavel Mansurov, Pyotr Galadzhev, Vasilii Yermilov in Russian collections are rare. Therefore, any showing of such works is one more step in filling in the history of Russian art. The works of Aristarkh Lentulov, Robert Falk, Pyotr Konchalovsky, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Kazimir Malevich, Yuri Annenkov, Mikhail Larionov and Natalya Goncharova, David Burliuk, Ivan Puni and Aleksandra Exter are also included in the exhibition.

Many historic and artistic rarities are to be encountered in the foreign collections: Aleksandr III’s gold samovar; a folding icon presented to Nikolai II by the Petersburg nobility; and several beautifully made imperial snuff-boxes and cases from the Fabergé workshops. Kept by private owners, these items can now be shown, studied and published.
