These pendants became popular talismans towards the end of the war, believed to bring luck to soldiers in battle and protection to civilians during air raids. These talismanic powers were conditional. First, one could not purchase or make one for oneself. It had to be a gift. Second, they could not be separated. Originally made of yarn and other textile material, they were also made in silver, bakelite, and ivory.
